Baby Sign Language

For parents to connect with other parents with babies of a similar age and to teach their babies to communicate before they can talk. For babies of up to 1 years of age, this course is aimed at Parents teaching Irish sign language through nursery rhymes and poems so that you can teach your baby basic signs.

Resilience for Parents in the Workplace - the Life/Work Balance

Resilience at work is now recognised as a defining characteristic of employees who deal well with the stress and strains of the modern workplace. However, there are times, when we may feel so overwhelmed, juggling family life, work life and meeting all our financial responsibilities, that finding time for ourselves to reflect on how we are dealing with these challenges, can be difficult. Glenna will discuss the importance of resilience as well as several options which can sustain us through challenging times - or example self care, asking for help, and compassion for ourselves as we begin look at ways to ensure a better quality of life, not just in the workplace but in the home.

Understanding your Teenager

This talk will help parents to understand what is happening emotionally, physically and psychologically during adolescence. It is hoped that such understanding will help make sense of some of the commonly occurring challenges for Parents - such as dealing with impulsivity, risk-taking behaviours and rule-breaking for example. The talk will also explore how this awareness can equip parents to support their children during the teenage years while maintaining a close and nurturing connection.

Starting Secondary School

The move from primary to secondary school can result in both anxiety and excitement, and that is just for the parents! This is one the most significant transitions our young teens face. The changes are social, emotional and academic as they move from being the 'seniors' in their primary school to the juniors in this new educational environment. In this talk Dr Mary O'Kane offers very practical advice on how we can support students on this new educational journey.

Dr Mary O'Kane is a Lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education. She has a monthly parenting slot on TV show Ireland AM and is also a regular contributor to the Alison Curtis show on Today FM.

Research finds that between one third and one half of people experience it. This talk aims to inform the community what it is, what it looks like, how to recognise it and how to deal with it. It is also for victims of sibling bullying to help validate and understand their experiences.

Yoga Workshop for Children with Additional Needs and their Families

Yoga as a therapeutic process can help children who have a special needs diagnosis gain additional coping skills for day to day life management. Yoga can help the child become strong in mind and in body, helping to build resilience and hone coping skills and mechanisms. Yoga may also help nurture children who have diagnosed with a particular condition, find a place in themselves where they can feel safe and at ease. This interactive workshop will show parents and children some techniques designed to self-calm and regulate which with practice can help children learn to reduce the added anxiety both parents and children may be feeling.

Dyslexia Talks - What is Dyslexia?

In this talk, we will discover what Dyslexia is, the causes and what we can do to make life easier for someone with Dyslexia. We will also cover how to get an assessment for a child or adult with Dyslexia, common indicators of Dyslexia, Dyslexia in school and technology that may help dyslexic children in their day to day and school life. There will also be lots of time put aside for participants to ask our Information Officer any questions that they may have about Dyslexia.

Occupational Therapy - Using Social Stories to help children with ASD understand and interact with others

One of the biggest challenges faced by children on the ASD spectrum can be their lack of comprehension with changing social and emotional situations in life. Some children find it simply impossible to naturally understand the difference between two seemingly obvious social scenes and can often react in a socially inappropriate manner. This talk aims to explore some of the reasons for these issues and go through series of Social Stories specifically designed to help children understand and more appropriately deal with various social scenes.

The Talk will address the following issues:

• Children’s senses can often be overwhelmed by sensory input which can lead to reactions

Sound Massage workshop for Children with Additional Needs and their Families

Introducing sound massage as a complimentary therapeutic support for the wellbeing of children with additional needs and their families.
In a playfully designed session, it will be demonstrated how parents can use singing bowls with their children. Therapeutic singing bowls are positioned on and around the body and are gently played to invite sound vibration into the body. We will explore sound through sound games, using our voice, singing, instruments like the gong, drums, percussion and chimes, sound massage and relaxation to the sounds of these wonderful instruments.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

ADHD, while it affects 5% of the population (or one in 20) is still very much a misunderstood condition. ADHD when identified and treated is a very manageable condition, however the rates for un-diagnosed ADHD in both children and adults is very high in Ireland. This talk will explain what ADHD is and what it is not, what are the treatment routes and tips on how to manage with the condition. This talk is suitable for both parents of children with ADHD and adults living with the condition.
